Babalon Diaries, Love Potion #9:Making the Moonchild

This is the ninth in a series of posts about my adventures during 2005, leading up to the performance of Paul Green’s play Babalon. The story is full of cloak and dagger, initiatory strangeness, chaos, and hysteria. It shows what can happen on the Magical path if one is not careful…(as if one has choice…)

Directed by occultist, Alison Rockbrand, Babalon was performed on December 5, 2005, at the John Gielgud Theatre at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts to a sold out audience of London’s finest occultists and magicians. If you want to listen to it, click Radio QBSaul: Archives: Babalon. I played Marjorie Cameron/Babalon. I am called Angela Murrow because I had to hide my identity.

The Stuff That Conspiracy Theories Are Made Of...

Below is a video full of controversy.

The life of Jack Parsons is tailor made for conspiracy theories.

Born on October 2, 1914, Jack was a brilliant chemist, who grew up in the hey day of science fiction:  Weird Tales, the mass hysteria of 1938′s War of the Worlds, and the whole scary genre of horror films including the famous Frankenstein about a mad scientist and his homunculous monster.

When Jack Parsons got involved with Aleister Crowley, the Great Beast was old. His health was failing and the “wickedest man in the world” was reduced to selling love potions on Brighton Pier just to stay alive. He predicted the desperately needed arrival of a “rich man from the west”. This turned out to be Jack Parsons.

In the 1940′s Parsons was engaged in rocketry experiments in the desert with a group of friends who would become the founders of the Space Program after WWII. He also opened an Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) Lodge in his childhood home in Pasadena, California, a  once wealthy suburb of Hollywood. This branch of the OTO  was called Agape Lodge, and it was devoted to free love and experimental drugs.

This group attracted L.Ron Hubbard, science fiction author, and dubious founder of Scientology. Fate would have it that Hubbard would become deeply involved in Parson’s Babalon Working. The purpose of the ritual was to draw a Scarlet Woman into Parson’s orbit who would then become impregnated, through a series of sexual rituals, with a Magickal Child, Horus, the avatar of the New Aeon. The Scarlet Woman was the visionary red head, Marjorie Cameron who arrived on Parsons’s doorstep when he returned from several intense, mad nights of invocation in the desert.

Fallout from Babalon

When I was studying to play Cameron/Babalon in the play Babalon, by Paul Green, I knew none of this stuff. I had been given the script and then a book by Sara called “Strange Angel” about the life of Jack Parsons. The book was factual and focused primarily on Parson’s contributions to the Space Program and his invention of rocket fuel. The Babalon Working was discussed, but aside from Parson’s horrific death at the age of 38, it did not delve into the further consequences of the Babalon Working. This was taken up by Kenneth Grant, and videos like this one.

Connections have been made between Parsons, Hubbard’s Scientology, Hollywood (Kenneth Anger says he called his books on movieland scandals “Hollywood Babylon” in honor of Crowley),  the film “Rosemary’s Baby”, Charles Manson as a member of the OTO, and on and on….

During rehearsals for the play, I experienced a lot of weird fallout. Its effects continued for a long time, and I am constantly aware of how my personality has changed because I embodied Babalon, not once, but for several months as we worked on the play. Jung would call this experience “Shadow Work”.

The weirdest thing is how this scarlet shadow of mine has a connection to the Holy Grail. My Grail initiation in 1996 through the Tuatha deDannan was the reason I went to England in the first place and its trasmutations seem endless.

These details will come to light as the Babalon Diaries grow. Suffice to say here that in December 2005, my life became a journey through a series of explosions, both symbolically, psychically, and literally, and in some of the most uncanny ways.

The Moonchild

I have always loved the Moon. I watch it in all its phases, read myths about the moon, even identify with the Moon and her Goddesses. When I found a book called The Moonchild in the 1980′s, I was drawn more to the idea of a Moonchild than to its author, Aleister Crowley. I thought  The Moonchild would be a magical novel along the lines of Dion Fortune’s Moon Magic.  I was right, in the sense that it was a novel with a Moon ritual inside of it. But the atmosphere and intent were far different.

A Moonchild is created by impregnating the mother-to-be under certain Astrological tides related to the Moon. For the entire nine months, she is wrapped in a kind of occult cocoon in order to cultivate the extreme passivity needed so that she would be receptive to lunar visions. The images and energies of these visions imprinted the unborn child with the vibrations of the Moon. The mother dressed in white; she slept and ate in a room that was decorated as a kind of lunar chamber. She ate “moon food”: white, flabby things like oysters and cheese, and lived in a constant twilight state, almost of suspended animation.

Crowley’s description of this Moonchild Ritual stayed with me for years. As a born psychic and lover of the Moon, this ritual was  attractive as a fantasy, but totally repellent as a real experience. Cold, damp, endless, twilight or darkness, extreme passivity, loss of consciousness are pretty disturbing and unhealthy conditions. But then the Moon has a way of casting a glamor over things, and it is that lunar enchantment that makes the ordeal of the nine month  preparation of the Moonchild so compelling to the subconscious mind.

Dark Theories

In the year 1966,  the closest numerical approximation to the Beast’s famous number 666, the film Rosemary’s Baby was released. Based on a best selling novel of the same title, it is a story about the creation of the Moonchild.

(As I wrote the last sentence, I had  an intense deja vu…I think I have written it before and had the same deja vu then, as well…..)

Since Roman Polanski directed Rosemary’s Baby, and the film is about the anti-Christ, connections to the tragic, and apparently occult murder of Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate abound.

While filming, Polanski had Devil Worshipper, Anton Lavey, on the set acting as consultant for the ritual elements of the film

Manson was a member of the  California OTO.

Manson had studied Scientology. L.Ron Hubbard did magic with Parsons. Hubbard’s own son admits that Scientology is Black Magic.

Sharon Tate, while filming Eye of the Devil in England in the early 60′s, was initiated into Wicca by Alex Sanders. I believe she based her characterization of Odile on Maxine Sanders.

The media makes a connection between Roman Polanski’s alleged interest in the occult and Sharon Tate’s death. (I think that is B.S. and victim blaming.)

The Scarlet Woman brings in the Age of Horus through bloodshed. “Force and Fire!”

It was said that when Jack Parsons did his Babalon Working he tore a hole in the Universe and let in something evil. Is it any wonder that these illusions and allusions pile up under the influence of the Moon?

  1. i watched the babalon working. the picture are taken from the movie “immortal”, where horus comes to earth cause he lost his immortality and he has to find a host body to provide for a son, while anubis and bast plaY CHESS.i m nota horus fan a i dont agree how isis brught him up, cause he is seperated from his brother anubis.

  2. Thanks Barry and Alex.
Alex, that film sounds interesting. I find the whole Thelemic current a bit alien to me even after the Babalon initiation. I have internalized Babalon along the lines of Faery Tradition and the Holy Grail.
Also Barry, if you join my email newsletter, I have sent out an all purpose spell that I have found really effective over many years. You might give it a try, if you can wait a couple of weeks. Good luck!

  3. Love Potion Number Nine! As sung by the Coasters, and written by Leiber & Stoller.. Interesting how so many old R&B songs have supernatural allusions – the mojo, the seventh son, the black cat bone etc. The voodoo roots of the blues. But that’s another story…

Another fascinating installment, which has started me reading Crowley’s Moonchild again. Weirdly comic in places, with that Edwardian/1920s flavour in the dialogue.

And for the first time in my life, reading your account, I feel in an odd unexpected way the responsibility of the artist. What have I started here…?

But re the latest: The Babalonian Kabbalah video is intriguing and visually impressive and I’m glad you posted it. But it’s rather suspect as an account of Parsons. The person who made it – “Anonymous Truthteller” – has any number of similar postings on youtube, with recurrent conspiracy themes – the great Jewish conspiracy, the great Jesuit conspiracy, the great government conspiracy etc.

Sometimes, of course,” a paranoid is a man who knows the facts” to quote Wm Burroughs but this chap seems a bit indiscriminate in finding synchronicities. He’s also loose with the detail. Far from endorsing Parson’s Moonchild experiment, Crowley was dismissive, calling Parsons and LRH “idiots” ( or “louts” depending on how you read 666′s handwriting). Parsons may have had connections with scientists on the Manhattan project, but there’s no positive evidence of that in the Pendle bio. When the ex-Nazi Von Braun arrived after the war, Parsons was to some extent marginalised and eventually resigned from JPL. I’m not convinced that Oppenheimer, Parsons and Von Braun were all deliberately in cahoots, although the forces, conscious or otherwise, that drove them may have been convergent.

More of this when we set up our chat, as and when you want go ahead.

    Best wishes

    Paul

  4. Hi Paul,
Yes isn’t it just too tempting to make conspiracy theories out of this stuff? You have to take it with a pinch of salt, but it is interesting in a sensationalistic sort of way.
Trouble is none of these folks are here to speak for themselves.
You shall see what have caused, but it wasn’t all your doing. I was in my Chiron return as well.

  5. I also want to address the Jewish conspiracy stuff. I have many Jewish friends and if there is one thing I am very clear on its that they do not believe in Jesus Christ. So the idea of a Anti-Christ is not going to have any effect on them as you can’t be anti something that doesn’t exist.
Only dyed in the wool Christians can fall for this stuff, and make up these kind of conspiracy theories because they just basically don’t get it. They are so myopic that the idea that Jesus just isn’t in the equation for some people, doesn’t seem to cross their minds.

  7. ACTUALLY YOUR BABALON WORKING MAKES ME THINK OF SOMETHING I DID A FEW YEARS AGO.I HAD DONE A KIND OF RITUAL KNOWING AND NOT KNOWING IT AND THERE WAS A GIRL PRESENT AND SHE WAS A MIX OF BABALON AND MORGANA OR MAYBE LIKE A DEFORMED MORGANA, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BLEND CAUSE BOTH INFLENCES WHERE THERE BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY REVERSED COMPARED TO THE PICTURES I FELT MYSELF ASSAULTED BY.BUT IT DIDN T LAST THAT LONG. IT HAPPENED AT THE END OF A JOURNEY. YOU CAN T REALLY CALL IT ACTING BUT AT THE SAM=E TIME YOU CAN WHEN YOU TAKE IN ACCOUNT THAT YOU RE NOT YOUR TRUE SELF.IT DIDN T LAST THAT LONG, JUST A WHOLE NIGHT. THERE WAS THIS GIRL WITH DARK HAIR SITTING ON A THRONE IN THE WOODS BUT IT WASN T REALLY HERS.IT WAS A KIND OF DARK AUTUMN AND THAT IS WHERE SHE LIVED. ALL THE TREES HAD CHANGED AND LOOKED UNHEALTHY AND WITHOUT SUN.IT WAS AS IF THE SEASON WAS ALWAYS THE SAME. BUT SHE KEPT ON ASKING FOR SEX, AND SHE WAS VERY PRESSURISING, AND SHE KEPT ON ASKING AND THEN IMAGES CAME FASTER OF DARK TREES AND FAERIES AND TROLLS HOBGOBLINS AND BEINGS LIKE THAT EVERYTHING WENT FASTER AND FASTER AND THINGS WERE TURNING AND TURNING UNTIL YOU COULDN T SEE WHAT YO WERE SEING ANYMORE. IT LASTED FOR HOURS AND I COLDN T SLEEP AND EVEN WITH OPEN EYES I KEPT ON SEING THEM. IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING THAT WAS THERE THAT CAME TO THE SURFACE ALL OF A SUDDEN, BUT IT WAS TIRING AND PAINFUL, YOU ACTUALLY JUST THINK ABOUT CUTTING YOUR HEAD OFF.YOU CAN T BREATHE AND YOU EMBRACE THE WALLS AND YOU TRY TO BECOME ELASTIC YOU TRY TO STRETCH TO THE MAXIMUM. AND AFTER THAT THE NEXT FEW DAYS I WAS COMPLETLY DRAINED, AND LIKE WITHOUT A SOUL.

  8. Correction re Parsons & Manhattan project scientists! I’ve just checked Pendle and one of the A-bomb scientists Robert Cornog was for a while a lodger at Parsons’ mansion. However, there’s no evidence that they worked together either scientifically or magically.

More on all this when we talk…

    Best wishes

    Paul

  9. Is there any reliable evidence that Manson was ever a member of the OTO? Sounds like an unsubstantiated rumour. I know he attended a couple of Scientology meetings but I don’t think he got much beyond ‘checking it out.’
Might be worth writing and asking him!
The Babalon play was certainly an enthralling and memorable evening, and I’m looking forward to the interview with Paul. Am I right in thinking that the play was originally performed as a BBC radio drama?

  10. Years ago I read a book on Manson by Vincent Bugliosi, one of the lawyers on the case, who stated that Manson had casual contact with the “Solar Lodge”, quite possibly some renegade offshoot of the OTO. A woman called Jean Brayton (?) was mentioned. Perhaps he was checking it out…

I’m pleased to hear you liked the performance – much credit should go to the cast! Alas, the play was dropped by the BBC, as I explain in my talk with Arlene.

  11. You two should be talking! Maybe you can collaborate on a screen play about Parsons and Crowley and of course Babalon!

    Interview coming up!

  12. Will have to check my copy of ‘Helter Skelter’ if can locate it. I suspect the Manson/OTO connection stems from Ed Sanders in ‘The Family’ trying to link Manson to the Church of the Process, a suggestion taken up by Maury Terry in his sensationalist works. I know the Process was influenced by Crowley because I attended a performance of the ‘Hymn to Pan’ at their Mayfair hq.
All these cross-fertilisations are a boon to conspiracy theorists!

Paul, has ‘Babalon’ been performed anywhere since the production Arlene appeared in? (You probably cover that in the interview…)

  13. Maxine Sanders talks about the Process folks in her autobiography Firechild. She has nothing good to say about them. I actually heard they were a spin off from Scientology.
I met one of these guys shortly after I arrived in England in 1998. Someone in Seattle knew this guy and thought he would be interested in my Tarot deck. He was a total alcoholic with the ditsiest wife he called Pasifal I think because she was such a fool. He kept going on about how my artwork wasn’t sexual. Obviously he is spiritually bankrupt with no real understanding polarity or he wouldn’t have said that.

  14. The performance at RADA is the only one so far. I did draft a film treatment but, as I explain in the interview, it didn’t get very far. At least two other plays have been written about Parsons. One is by Barry Kavanagh, whom I met via the Babalon Working Group. (We collaborated on another project for TV, which never happened). I don’t think his play – which was pretty good – has been performed. Barry’s in Oslo now, mostly involved in music.

The other was by an American, who had a short fringe-type production in New York – I don’t know any more than that.

I heard of a friend of a friend who had some involvement with the Process back in the 60s and apparently it didn’t do her much good…

    The wife called Parsifal… extraordinary…

  15. In one of his interviews Kenneth Anger mentions being approached to direct his first commercial feature film – based on the life of his friend Jack Parsons. Presumably the film would have concentrated on the Babalon working. Nothing further seems to have come of it.

Incidentally, the late Hollywood director Curtis Harrington (who made ‘Night Tide’ in which Cameron made a brief appearance) made a short documentary about Cameron and her artwork, called IIRC ‘Wormwood’. I haven’t been able to locate a copy. Has anyone here seen it?

  16. Where and when? Hey Michel Write an article about Kenneth Anger’s Crowleyian influences. Or we can do a skype interview!
That’s an order. LOL No a Call to Action!
